Most Holy Face of Our Lord Jesus Christ

(Quinquagesima Tuesday)

Holy Face of Our Lord Jesus Christ, ODM pinxit
His Face was hidden, He appeared contemptible, and we took no account of Him.

Mass in honor of the Most Holy Face of Our Lord Jesus Christ disfigured in His Passion

Introit

(Ps. 68:8, 10) It is for Thy glory, Lord, that I have borne reproach. Shame hath covered My Face, and I have become the object of their mockery. (Ps. 68:2) Save me, O God, for the waters of tribulation have come in even unto my soul. Gloria Patri.

Collect

Almighty and merciful God, we beseech Thee, that in venerating the Face of Thy Christ, disfigured in the Passion because of our sins, we may deserve to contemplate it eternally in the brightness of heavenly glory. By the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who, being God, livest and reignest with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, forever and ever. Amen.

Epistle

Reading from the Prophet Isaiah (52:14-15; 53:1-4)
As many have been astonished upon seeing His desolation, so shall His face be inglorious among men, and His form among the children of men. He shall water many nations, and kings shall stand speechless before Him; for they who had not been told of Him shall see Him, and they who have not heard of Him shall behold Him. Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? And He shall grow up as a sapling before the Lord, and as a root out of arid ground. There is no beauty in Him, no comeliness; we have seen Him, and there was sightliness that we should desire Him, and we knew Him not. He appeared to us as despised and the most abject of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted only with suffering. His Face was hidden, He appeared contemptible, and we took no account of Him. He has surely borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows.

Gradual

(Ps. 43:16-17; St. Mark 14:65) All the day my disgrace is before me, and shame doth cover my Face, at the voice of him that mocks and detracts me, and when I see my enemy and my persecutor. ℣. And they spit upon Jesus, and covered His Face and struck Him, saying, “Prophecy! Who is it that struck You?” And the attendants rained blows upon Him.

Tract

(Ps. 68:21-22, 27) My heart has expected all sorts of opprobrium and misery. And I looked for one who would grieve with me, and there was none; for someone to comfort me, but I found none. Rather, they gave me gall for my food; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. ℣. They persecuted the one You have struck; and they added to the pain of my wounds.

Gospel

The Sequel of the holy Gospel according to saint Mark (14:61-65).
In those days, the High Priest asked Jesus, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?” And Jesus said to Him: “I am. And you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power of God and coming upon the clouds of heaven.” Then the High Priest tore his garments and said: “What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” And they all condemned Him as liable to death. And some began to spit on Him, and they covered His Face and struck Him with their fists, saying to Him: “Prophesy! Who is it that struck You?” And the attendants rained blows upon Him.
